The Strum Story
Strum Place is named in honor of historic St. Petersburg family, the Strums. Alban D. “Al” Strum, was a speedboat champion who polished St. Petersburg’s image as a yachting and boating center. Strum moved to St. Petersburg with his family in 1905, eventually graduating from Historic Kenwood’s St. Petersburg High School. In 1923, when the stately house at 6633 Central Avenue was built, Mr. Strum purchased the home for himself, his wife Shirley, and their family.
Remembered for her charitable efforts, Mrs. Shirley B. Strum helped found the St. Petersburg chapter of the Junior League in 1931 in response to hurricane damage in South Florida and a call to help. Mrs. Strum served as President of the St. Petersburg Junior League in 1938 & 1939. Mrs. Strum also helped to establish the city’s first milk fund for babies in need and advocated hiring the city’s first public health worker.
Mr. Strum’s passion was for boating, making St. Petersburg his ideal hometown. He was incredibly skilled on the water, setting world records and winning national championships as a powerboat racer, as well as making a name as one of the finest skippers of sailboats in the region. Mr. Strum served as secretary and general manager at The St. Petersburg Yacht Club for 12 years, even serving in the role of Commodore.
